Pigeon Forge's Light Trail Gets Its First Race This Winterfest

October 15, 2026

On Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, the City of Pigeon Forge Special Events Department holds its first Winterfest 5K & Kids Fun Run. The course is the Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail, and runners start and finish at Patriot Park. The city calls it a new race. Until now, the light trail has been something you walk through after dark. This year it gets a start line, professional timing, and a medal at the end.

The Winterfest lights hang on part of the paved Riverwalk along the Little Pigeon River, and that path is open all year. Most of what the city schedules this season happens along that one river path, with Patriot Park as the center.

A race course the city already paved

The race page describes the 5K as paved, mostly level, and out-and-back on the Wonders of Light trail. The city says it's built for runners and walkers of every ability. The Kids Fun Run is for ages 12 and under: two laps of the Little Pigeon Riverwalk at Patriot Park. Parents signed up for the 5K can run the Fun Run with their child first. The city says there's still time to reach the 5K start by 7:30 a.m.

The full Riverwalk is 6.4 miles of paved path along the river. The Winterfest lights cover only part of it, so don't treat 6.4 miles as the length of the lit section. A 3.1-mile out-and-back fits on the path without leaving the river. Everyone who finishes gets professional timing, a finisher T-shirt, and a finisher medal.

According to the official Winterfest listing, the trail is pet- and wheelchair-friendly, has more than six million lights, and includes more than 45 nature-themed displays. The listing also calls it one of the nation's largest free outdoor light festivals. That's the same stretch of river you'd use for a weekday walk.

Race week, in order

Race week runs Thursday through Saturday, and each day is at a different spot.

When What Where
Oct. 31, 2026 Last day for the $30 entry RunSignup registration
Dec. 3–4, 3:00–7:00 p.m. Packet pickup Pigeon Forge Community Center
Dec. 5, 7:00 a.m. Kids Fun Run, ages 12 and under Patriot Park
Dec. 5, 7:30 a.m. Winterfest 5K Patriot Park, out-and-back on the light trail

The race page prints two street addresses for Patriot Park: 236 Old Mill Avenue in the schedule and 186 Old Mill Avenue in the location block. Pigeon Forge's Riverwalk guide sorts it out. Patriot Park is 186 Old Mill Ave., and the trolley center next door is 236 Old Mill Ave. Both are Riverwalk access points.

The price changes on Halloween

Entry is $30 if you register by Oct. 31, 2026. After that it's $35, all the way through race morning. As of today, Oct. 12, the lower price has 19 days left. You can also register late: sign-ups stay open until the 7:30 a.m. start, so you can decide based on the forecast and pay $5 more.

Packet pickup is two evenings, Dec. 3 and 4 from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Pigeon Forge Community Center. If you register early, you'll know whether a workday evening fits before the week gets busy.

The rest of the season starts at the same park

The race comes about a month into Winterfest, and the city's other events mostly lead back to the same corner of Old Mill Avenue. This season's lights run Nov. 6, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027.

The official kickoff is Nov. 13 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Patriot Park. The listing names the walking trail, the driving tour, and the Christmas Village as its connected events. It doesn't list a music lineup or a timed program.

The Wonders of Light Christmas Village opens the same day at Patriot Park, "just steps away" from the walking trail. It has 35-plus artisan and crafter booths, and admission is free. The first weekend is Nov. 13–15. The page lists two different ranges for the second run: Nov. 20–28 near the top and Nov. 21–29 in the date block below. Check the city's page before you plan around Nov. 20 or Nov. 29.

Parking is mostly free near the river. Pigeon Forge's transit page says the trolley-station lot at Patriot Park is limited but free, and it lists the River and Mountain lots as free too. The Municipal Parking Lot at 2936 Teaster Lane is another Riverwalk access point. The trolleys also run out of the Mass Transit Trolley Station by Patriot Park. Fares are $1 for the North Parkway, South Parkway, Gatlinburg Welcome Center, and Wears Valley routes, $2.50 for Dollywood, and $3 for an all-day pass. Those are regular fares, not prices for a Winterfest light tour.

Where the lights reach past the river

Away from the Riverwalk, the city's lights continue as the Winterfest Driving Tour of Lights. The route runs along the Parkway past Smoky Mountain wildlife, tall trees, giant ornaments, and the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel lit up in holiday colors. Last season's driving-tour map also named stops such as the Old Mill Scene, Lights of Island Drive, Lights of Patriot Park, the Trolley Station, Winter Wonderland Bridges, and Winter's Waterfall. A 2026 map hadn't come out when we checked.

Several venues line up their own seasons with Winterfest:

  1. Winterfest at The Island starts Nov. 21 and runs through Jan. 31, 2027. Opening night has free Santa photos at 5 p.m., a free concert at 7 p.m., and the lighting of a 40-foot walk-through tree at 8 p.m. After that, a fountain and tree show runs nightly at 6, 7, 8, and 9 p.m.
  2. The Mountain Mile Christmas Market is back Nov. 27 through Dec. 31 on Fridays and Saturdays. It has local vendors, s'mores kits, gourmet hot chocolate, lights, photo spots, and visits with Santa.
  3. Christmas at Array is marked "NEW" in this year's Pigeon Forge holiday-show guide. The same guide says the Christmas edition of "Illusionation, Believe in Magic" opens in November at The Mountain of Entertainment Theater.
  4. Paula Deen's Lumberjack Feud Christmas Supper Show runs Nov. 7 through Jan. 4, 2027. It adds a new Christmas comedy skit along with seasonal songs, a holiday supper, and a large lit tree.
  5. Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas runs Nov. 6, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, according to Dollywood's festival page. Peppermint Valley and Snow in the Grove are back this year. Both were part of the 2025 festival, so they aren't new.

Of the city's own events on this calendar, the 5K is the only first-time one. The kickoff, the Christmas Village, and the driving tour all return, and all three are still centered on the park.

Last season's trail, for reference

No 2026 walking-trail map or nightly hours had been posted when we checked. The details below come from the city's November 2025 trail guide and last year's map. They describe what the course looked like then, not a confirmed plan for this season.

Last year the lit section started at the Riverwalk entrance in the Municipal Parking Lot on Teaster Lane and ran to around Old Mill Avenue and Butler Street. Access points were the Municipal Lot, the LeConte Center, the Old Mill, and Patriot Park. The trail was lit from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. daily. Scenes included butterflies, wildflowers, a 20-foot ice fountain, deer, bears, fireflies, trout, and other woodland animals, set to music.

The 2025 map listed 21 stops, including:

  • Gateway of Lights
  • Fountain of Playful Polars
  • Lefty Goes Fishing
  • Shaconage' Forest
  • Dreamsicle Falls
  • Dancing Northern Lights
  • Dolly's Courtyard of Butterflies
  • Snowflake Lane on Butler St.

The city's current listing counts more than 45 displays, while last year's map listed 21 stops. The sources don't say whether one map stop can include several displays. If last year's layout holds, a 5K that starts at Patriot Park would run the Old Mill end of the trail. Runners can confirm the course at packet pickup.
